Student life is the golden time of opportunities. As a student you should not let it go on spending non-useful activities. We should try to learn and instill more and more. To learn and instill any kind of activities, we have to be productive.
Today, we will
discuss about the 5 qualities which a student must inculcate to be productive.
These 5 qualities
are inscribed in Sanskrit Verse.
The verse is
“KAKA CHESHTA
BAKO DHANYAM
SWANA NIDRA
TATHAIWA CHA
ALPAHARI,
GRIHATYAGI,
VIDYARTHI PANCHA LAKSHNAM.”
काक चेष्टा, बको ध्यानं, स्वान निद्रा तथैव च
स्वल्पहारी, गृहत्यागी विद्यार्थी पंच लक्षणं।
Let’s decipher the
meaning this verse.
KAKA CHESHTA: KAKA means ‘Crow’
and CHESHTA means ‘Effort’. Thus, KAKA CHESHTA means ‘Effort of Crow’.
I believe, you
have heard of the story of Thirsty Crow. If you didn’t, I will tell you in
gist.
An extremely
thirsty crow was flying and searching for water. It saw a pitcher of water in a
garden. The crow landed on the rim of the pitcher and found, there was water.
The water was at very bottom of the pitcher. There was no way to reach to the
water. After thinking for some time, he got a great idea. He saw some pebbles
in the garden and put the pebbles in pitcher by his beak. Pebbles, pebbles by
pebbles were put into the pitcher. After laborious efforts, the water level
rose enough where he could drink water. He drunk the water and flew away.
This story depicts
the patience, the planning, the tremendous efforts crow. These three qualities
a student must possess. A student should to have patience in every situation.
He/She should plan its effort smartly.
Then, they must execute their effort seamlessly till they achieve their
desire results.
BAKO DHYANAM: BAKO means
‘Crane’ and DHYANAM means ‘Meditation or Focus’. In whole it means ‘The Intense
Focus like a Crane’.
Have you ever seen
a Crane while hunting for its fish near edge of pond or any water resources?
The crane focus is
intense. He has great patience and stillness till it catch a fish. His focus is
on playing fish inside water not on flowing water.
Student must set
his bull’s eye. To achieve success or accomplish a task, a student must possess
patience as well as an intense focus. Like the crane, you have to focus on
fish, not on running water. Similar in life, to sustain focus, you should allow
the disturbing thing to pass by. As a student, you must have some interpersonal
issues, distraction like mobile games, relationship issues, discouragements and
failures. You should let it go. And focus on the bull’s eye where to want to
get yourself. So, focus on what is important and also important.
Focus, Focus, and
Focus.
SWANA NIDRA: Swana means
‘Dog’ and Nidra means ‘Sleeping’. In whole it means the sleep of dog. In more
precise, you can say ‘the Alertness of Dog’.
Everyone loves
dog, if you are not, you should get attach to them. They are cute and playful.
Have you ever seen
a dog while he is sleeping?
Even his eyes are
closed while he is sleeping, but he is attentive of its surrounding.
I derive, two
aspects from this term ‘Swana Nidra’. One is the alertness during sleeping
which is direct one. Second one has a deeper one. It means, A student must
aware of its surrounding while he is doing his duties of studying and learning.
Here, surrounding means the contemporary issues, Science & Technology,
Sports, Famous personalities like Scientists, CEOs, Awardees, Character from
Mythology, History. Rather than spending more time on non-useful activities,
spend some time on listening, watching and reading meaningful, useful and
informative podcasts, videos and blog posts respectively. As a student, these
activities will widen your knowledge, your perspectives and help you to decide
what is right or wrong? You can learn much more from other’s experiences.
ALPAHARI: This term is of
two Sanskrit words. ALPA, which means ‘less’ and AHARA means ‘Food’. In whole,
it says, a Student who is seeking for Knowledge should eat less food.
Here, food is for hunger, it helps us to build a healthy body. Like food, sound
is a food for ears, Sight is a food for Eyes. Every sensory organ needs a food
or inputs. We should care about the inputs we give to our sensory organs. Every
input has an impact on our inner peace, psyche and mental peripheries. It
stimulates our emotions which reflects on our actions.
GRIHATYAGI: GRIHA means
‘home’ and TYAGI means ‘Leave or Give Up’. In whole, it means ‘Leaving Home’.
In ancient times,
Student would leave their home at early age to study under their teacher or
Spiritual Gurus. Those school was called as ‘Gurukul’.
It has also
another aspect. Home is our comfort zone. A student must leave his/her comfort
zone to excel in his/her life. Comfort zone makes our life comfort. We never
come to know about the struggle of life and lessons from it. As a student, you
must give up your comfort to get victory.
